A Historic Stay at the Guest House at Field Farm

The Guest House at Field Farm is maintained by The Trustees of Reservations which is an organization that protects a series of incredible properties across Massachusetts including trails, historic places, and gardens.

The Grounds

The Field Farm property, located in Williamstown, MA, includes more than 300 acres of open fields and woods. It also offers over 4 miles of scenic trails with mountain views including Mount Greylock, the tallest mountain in the state of Massachusetts.

The Property

Sitting on the Field Farm property is a mid-century modern Bed and Breakfast known as The Guest House at Field Farm. The inside of the Guest House is filled with modern artwork and decor that represents the style of the home’s original owners, Lawrence and Eleanor Bloedel. The two were avid collectors of modern art and furniture. The home was designed in 1948 by Edwin Goodell, Jr. and the architecture of the building allows for gorgeous field and mountain views from almost any part of the home.

The Guest Rooms

There are six guest rooms in the house and each one is uniquely decorated. I stayed in the North Room, which features custom built-ins designed by Lawrence Bloedel, a private balcony and amazing mountain views, including a direct view of Mount Greylock.

Ideas for your Stay

Watch the Sunrise. Start your day early by waking up to watch the sunrise over the mountains. The property is especially peaceful in the early morning.

Enjoy Breakfast

Your stay comes with a full breakfast and you won’t want to skip it. Head to the dining room to enjoy a freshly made breakfast with great coffee too. I had the blueberry pancakes and they were absolutely delicious!

Hike the Trails. Walk the four miles of trails across the property. The trails conveniently start right outside the door of the Guest House. My favorite trail is the North Trail which takes you along the field and provides an expansive backdrop of mountain views. You can see the top of Mount Greylock and the Veterans War Memorial Tower in the distance.

Have a Picnic

Pick up sandwiches from The Store at Five Corners located just a few minutes from Field Farm.

Enjoy a picnic at one of the many picnic tables available on the property or have lunch from your balcony at The Guest House.

Take a Self Guided Sculpture Tour

You will find 13 permanent sculptures on the property.

Schedule a Tour of the Folly

This unique pinwheel-shaped cottage was built in 1965 by Ulrich Franzen. The structure sits alongside the pond and was used as the Bloedel’s guest home. The inside has been preserved with artifacts from the time period.

Relax in the living room at The Guest House which offers a full mountain view from every seat. Enjoy afternoon cookies, local coffee and assorted teas which are available daily. I enjoyed mine in the living room looking out at the mountains.

What to do Nearby

The Field Farm property is just 10 minutes from the center of Williamstown where you will find shops and restaurants. A few of my favorite spots to visit nearby are:

  • The Clark - An art museum with several collections and rotating exhibitions. The property also offers a series of trails, a cafe, and an incredible outdoor reflecting pool.

  • The Store at Five Corners - One of my all time favorite places for sandwiches. This market and cafe is located just minutes from Field Farm and is the perfect spot to pick up items for a picnic.

  • Spruces Park - A great destination for sunset views and trail walks with a 2.2 mile trail. This unique property features two large white lion statues at the entrance of the 40 acre park. The statues remain on the property from when this spot was a mobile home community.

  • Berkshire Cider Project - Location just over the town line into North Adams you will find this craft cidery. Enjoy a flight here to try a variety of their ciders. I love them all! For more great spots to explore in North Adams, check out my North Adams blog post for all the details.
