A Visit to Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory - South Deerfield, MA

Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens - Looking for a break from cold New England winter temperatures? Step inside Magic Wings in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, where it’s always a balmy 80-degrees!

My first visit to Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens was perfect. It was on a cold day in January and there was a beautiful light snow coming down as I made my way to the building.

Once inside, I crossed through the atrium and headed into the gift shop, which is where you will purchase your ticket and get your butterfly stamp. You’ll also find a large selection of items in the gift shop for purchase including cute sweatshirts, books, and lots more butterfly themed items.

There is also a coat room just off the atrium where you can hang up your jacket before heading into the conservatory. I highly recommend either using the coat room or leaving your jacket in the car as you won’t be needing it inside the conservatory.

Before going into the conservatory, you’ll pass through a room filled with unique lizards and frogs.

And then it’s time to see the butterflies!

As the doors opened to the conservatory, you could immediately feel the warm air. My first thought when entering the space was - this is incredible! It felt almost like stepping into a tropical climate with warm temps, tropical plants, and it smelled great too.

You’ll find a beautiful gazebo in the the middle of the conservatory with benches dedicated to those who have cherished Magic Wings as much as its current visitors. It’s a great spot to stop and take in the surrounding views and floral smells.

The 8,000-square-foot conservatory features glass ceilings for plenty of natural light, lush tropical plants, soothing fountains, and thousands of butterflies. The conservatory is home to about 45 unique species of butterflies native to Central and South America, Australia, and the United States.

And the conservatory is also home to other inhabitants, including reptiles, birds, fish, and amphibians.

You’ll find plenty of cozy spots to sit and soak in the beauty of this magical space. While you can make your way through the conservatory quickly if you prefer, I recommend planning to spend at least an hour (or more) to fully enjoy the experience.

You will find plenty of benches throughout the conservatory so you can stop and enjoy the space. And if you sit still you may even find that a butterfly lands on you.

During your visit be sure to also peek inside the butterfly nursery.  If you’re lucky, you might even spot butterflies emerging from their chrysalises.

A huge thank you to Kathy Fiore, who owns Magic Wings Conservatory and cares for all of its residents. Kathy gave me an amazing tour of the property and I learned so much about the history of this beautiful spot.

This special place first opened in 2000 and is now celebrating its 25 year anniversary!
